How to Recycle in Putnam County:
- Rinse out all your plastic bottles, steel and aluminum cans
- Remove lids from plastic bottles
- Separate your recyclables into classes

What Putnam County Recycles at Nine Convenience Centers:
- Cardboard boxes (food boxes, packing boxes, appliance boxes, etc.)
- Paper (newspaper and inserts, magazines, catalogs, telephone books)
- #1 & #2 Plastic (beverage and detergent bottles), if the bottle has a neck and a triangle recycling symbol on the bottom, that contains either a #1 or a #2
- Metals (aluminum beverage cans, steel food cans, scrap metals)
- Glass (green, brown and clear glass) separated by color. (Only at City sites.)
- Appliances (stoves, water heaters, washers & dryers, dish washers, microwaves, televisions, gas grills w/o gas tanks) (cooling appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners must be free of all refrigerant (Freon) and lines be disconnected before the appliance can be taken). All county sites except for Buffalo Valley.
- Used motor oil, no containers
- Automotive batteries
- Tires (can be taken at Putnam County Landfill only, limit 10 tires per day from non-commercial (residents) are free of charge, commercial tire disposal must pay tipping fee) (all tires must be off the rim)
- Brush (tree trimmings) can be taken to chip yard on Jackson St. for chipping or can be taken to Putnam county landfill free of charge. All commercial brush must be taken to the landfill and haulers must pay a tipping fee
- Grass clippings, leaves, etc. can be taken to any of the county convenient sites (must be bagged)
